Pelican Bay offers an oasis of nature-laden paths and trails reminiscent of days gone by. Winding in and out of mangrove forests nestled between Pelican Bay Boulevard and the beautiful Gulf of Mexico, the Bay is an idyllic location to enjoy biking, blading and jogging, or just a leisurely stroll. Hidden from public view, members and guests are welcomed into the largest privately owned land conservation area west of U.S. 41 in Naples, a private haven of 530 acres of natural beauty. The berms and boardwalks intersect to provide outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers with miles of pathways teaming with an array of wildlife and exclusive tranquility in the heart of Naples. Although bicycles and bladers are not permitted on the boardwalk, both the North and South berm are ideal paths. Bikers will find a number of bike racks conveniently located throughout the community: Tram Stations 2, 4, 5, 6, 8; North and South Tennis centers; and the entry to The Commons building. Pelican Bay Boulevard and Gulf Park Drive have “sharrows” or shared lane markings painted on the outside lanes. Sharrows are symbols that guide bicycles to the best place to ride on the road and remind drivers to share the road with cyclists. Sharrows do not designate a particular part of the road for the exclusive use of bicycles. They simply guide the bicycles to the safest place to ride. The sharrow lane markings also alert motorists that bicycles may be encountered in the lane and to share the lane with them. By Florida State law, motorists must allow three feet between their vehicle and the bicycle they are passing. Drivers should pass cyclists by using the inside lane. Bicyclists should ride to the right over the sharrow lane markings to maximize their safety. The Foundation wants to remind members and their guests of important safety protocols that everyone should follow when walking, biking, etc., on the berm. It’s important to be aware of your surroundings while enjoying Pelican Bay’s great outdoor amenities. The berm is a treasured, natural preserve for everyone in Pelican Bay. Enjoy it by being safe and courteous. TOP 5 THINGS TO KNOWABOUT SAFELY BIKING ON THE BERM: 1. Bicyclists should use a bell or call out “on your left” when passing others. 2. Pedestrians need to remain alert for bicyclists and trams approaching from ahead and behind, staying to one side to safely allow them to pass. 3. Pay attention. Do not wear headphones, so that you can hear the traffic and pedestrians around you. Never text and ride. 4. Make sure all equipment on your bike is in working order (brakes, gears, tires, etc.). 5. Electric bikes and all electromechanicalpowered vehicles, other than electric wheelchairs and handicap mobility scooters, are prohibited from the berm, boardwalk and deck. Please be safe and responsible by familiarizing yourself with all of the rules and safety regulations found on our website: Pelican Bay.org.
