Organizations in the Bay Pelican Bay Men’s Coffee traces its beginnings to 1995, when Joe Adams got a small group of residents together over coffee at the South Beach restaurant. These pioneers shared an active curiosity about issues ranging from local governance to broader concerns that, one way or another, affected property values and quality of life in Pelican Bay. It quickly became apparent that each participant brought experience, insights and diverse backgrounds from residing in communities throughout the country and, indeed, from all parts of the world. As word of the group spread, the number of attendees swelled to the point that a facility was needed, and a regular meeting time and date was agreed upon. With an ever-increasing attendance and popularity of the Men’s Coffee, the decision was made to invite outside speakers to address the group, setting the pattern that extends to this day. While women are invited as speakers, the group remains all male. The Women’s League serves much the same purpose for the women members of Pelican Bay. Pelican Bay Men’s Coffee meets every Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. in the Pelican Bay Community Center. All men in Pelican Bay are invited to attend the hour-long sessions, where, for the modest fee of $2, they may enjoy a cup of coffee and a bagel or sweet roll. Joe Adams continued to play a leadership role with the Men’s Coffee until 2017, when declining health prevented him from attend- ing meetings. On Aug. 29, 2020, at the age of 95, Joe Adams passed away at home surrounded by his family. Over the years, the Men’s Coffee has increasingly become a gathering that features a wide range of guest speakers presenting a broad array of ideas and topics that are informative, topical and relevant. The format, which includes an interactive Q & A session, is designed to engage attendees and allow for a lively exchange of views and experiences. The program committee welcomes speaker suggestions for future meetings and plans to continue offering interesting and informative presentations.
