moved ahead. With the support of the
Foundation, the Pelican Bay Services
Division obtained a long-sought permit
to resume regular dredging of ClamPass.
This was needed for the health of the
mangrove forest, which has suffered a
worrisome 10-acre die-off, in part because
ClamPass has been closing in. The PBSD
also undertook beach renourishment,
adding sand in the vicinity of Marker 36,
to increase the width of the beach.
To protect the beauty and ambiance
of Pelican Bay, the Foundation has
engaged a highly-regarded consulting
firm to evaluate the codes and cov-
enants that govern building, redevel-
opment and landscaping in Pelican
Bay. The firm will advise on design
guidelines and ways to strengthen the
Foundation’s development review pro-
cess as redevelopment pressures intensify.
The Foundation continues to focus
on increasing member satisfaction with
the beach restaurants, one of Pelican
Bay’s most valued amenities. In a tight
labor market, it has been difficult to
recruit enough staff to adequately ser-
vice our restaurants in high season. To
give Pelican Bay an edge in finding and
keeping good workers, the Foundation
has added two well-located properties
to its inventory of employee housing, a
major recruiting tool for seasonal staff.
The Foundation’s program of capital
improvements continues to move
forward. The Commons site improve-
ments and new tram station were
completed in 2015. The expansion of
the Commons building as a center for
staff and operations was completed in
late 2016. Next in the project pipeline
is the South Beach facility, where new
permitting requirements are being
evaluated for their potential impact on
project design and costs. Upgrades to
the South Beach facility are expected
within the next several years, with
expansion of the Community Center
to follow.
The Foundation’s decision to
develop a fiber optic network, in col-
laboration with Summit Broadband,
has been successfully accomplished
with the conversion of 6,000 house-
holds. In addition to bulk discounts for
television and telephone services, Peli-
can Bay members now enjoy enhanced
internet and digital streaming services
that few other communities can offer.
Positive developments don’t usually
happen by accident. They are always
helped by forward thinking and plan-
ning. Through the strategic planning
process, Pelican Bay Members play an
ongoing role in making Pelican Bay a
premier community!
