Pelican Bay Annual Member Guide 2018 - page 103

P
elican Bay Men’s Coffee traces
its beginnings to 1995, when
Joe Adams got a handful
of residents together over coffee at
the South Beach restaurant. These
pioneers shared an active curios-
ity about issues ranging from local
governance to broader concerns that,
one way or another, affected property
values and quality of life in Pelican
Bay. It quickly became apparent that
each participant brought experience
and insights from diverse backgrounds
from residing in communities through-
out the country and, indeed, from all
parts of the world. As word of the
group got around, the number of
attendees swelled to the point that a
facility was needed and a regular meet-
ing time and date was agreed upon.
During “season,” meetings were
held at the Community Center with
summertime gatherings at North
Beach. Even during the reconstruc-
tion of the Community Center, Men’s
Coffee met without interruption in
leased quarters.
With an ever-increasing attendance
and popularity of the Men’s Coffee,
the decision was made to invite out-
side speakers to address the group,
setting the pattern that extends to
this day.
While women are invited as speak-
ers, the group remains all male. The
Women’s League serves much the same
purpose for the distaff members of
Pelican Bay.
Pelican Bay Men’s Coffee is still
headed by Joe Adams and meets
every Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. in
the Pelican Bay Community Center.
All men in Pelican Bay are invited to
attend the hour-long sessions where,
for the modest fee of $2, they may
enjoy a cup of coffee and a bagel or
sweet roll.
The program committee welcomes
suggestions of speakers for future
meetings and plans to continue
offering interesting and informative
presentations. These will include talks
by elected officials with whom we
hope to share our mutual concerns in
helping to maintain our quality
of life here in Pelican Bay.
